Press Release- Second Meeting of Nepal-Egypt Bilateral Consultation Mechanism

The second meeting of the Nepal-Egypt Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) was held today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates of Egypt in Cairo.  

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Ram Kaji Khadka, Joint Secretary/Head of the Central Asia, West Asia and Africa Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, and Ambassador Amr Hamza, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs of Egypt.

During the consultations, the two sides held substantive discussions covering the whole gamut of bilateral relations, including political, economic, commercial, cultural, and technical cooperation. They reviewed the existing bilateral engagements and expressed satisfaction over the longstanding friendly and cordial relations between Nepal and Egypt.

Both sides underscored the importance of further strengthening cooperation in the areas including trade, investment, tourism, hospitality, labour, agriculture, education, visa and consular matters, among others. The Nepali side highlighted Nepal’s investment-friendly environment and encouraged Egyptian companies to explore opportunities, particularly in agriculture and fertilisers. It also expressed keen interest in expanding market access for competitive exports such as tea, coffee, and pashmina.  The Egyptian side highlighted opportunities for increased economic engagement, tourism cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

The Nepali side also shared recent political developments in the country following the election held on 5 March 2026, which resulted in a stable government with a near two-thirds majority, and working with a focus on good governance, transparency, and a zero-tolerance approach to corruption. The Egyptian side congratulated Nepal on the successful conduct of the election and the formation of the new government.

The two sides exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in multilateral fora, including the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the World Trade Organisation, and the World Health Organisation, among others. The Nepali side appreciated Egypt’s role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, including mediation in the Israel–Hamas conflict.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Institute of Foreign Affairs of Nepal and the Institute for Diplomatic Studies of Egypt to promote cooperation in diplomatic training, research, and academic exchanges.

Also present in the meeting from Nepali side were H. E. Mr Sushil Kumar Lamsal, Ambassador of Nepal to Egypt, Ms Indira Gohiwar Aryal, Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr Top Narayan Giri, Under Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other officials of the Embassy. The Egyptian delegation also consisted of Minister Plenipotentiary Ms Saty Sarabana, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for South Asia and other officials of the Ministry.

The Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism between Nepal and Egypt was signed in Cairo on 16 July 2007. The first meeting of the BCM was held in Kathmandu in March 2008. Its next meeting will be held in Kathmandu at a mutually convenient time.
