Right Honourable Prime Minister Mr. K P Sharma Oli attended the opening session of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) in Awaza, Turkmenistan today. H.E. Mr. Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the President of Turkmenistan and His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, among others, addressed the opening session of the Conference.
In the afternoon, the Right Honourable Prime Minister addressed the plenary meeting of the Conference as the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and in national capacity. In the statement, the Prime Minister highlighted the structural challenges faced by the LLDCs in their pursuit of sustainable development. He urged global community to work together to find the innovative solutions to address these challenges and harness the potential of the LLDCs. The Right Honourable Prime Minister called for strong global and regional commitment to effectively implement the Awaza Programme of Action.
The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister highlighted the vision of Nepal to turn it from landlocked to land-linked country. He underscored Nepal’s priority on cross-border connectivity through smart infrastructure, expanding highways and railways, improved trade routes, digital highways and green energy corridors.
Later in the afternoon, the Prime Minister addressed the ‘High-level Thematic Round Table 1: Structural transformation, diversification, and science, technology and innovation (STI) as drivers of prosperity in landlocked developing countries (LLDCs)’. In his address, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of structural transformation for LLDCs to turn them into a hub of growth, trade, innovation and sustainable development.
Besides, the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister addressed the side event ‘Promotion of Regional Security and Cooperation through Enhanced Trade and Transport Connectivity’. In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted that enhanced trade and transport connectivity is undeniably a catalyst for lasting cooperation, inclusive prosperity and stronger regional integration.
On the sidelines of the Conference, the Right Honourable Prime Minister held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Matters relating to enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries, among others, were discussed during the meeting.
The Right Honourable Prime Minister also attended the host country welcome ceremony in the morning.
In the evening, the Right Honourable Prime Minister attended a Gala Dinner hosted by the President of Turkmenistan, in honour of the heads of delegations to the LLDC3.
