Nepal- the Republic of Azerbaijan Relations

Diplomatic Relations

Nepal and the Republic of Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations on 28 February 1995. The relations between the two countries are based on mutual trust, friendship and goodwill and have remained cordial and friendly since then. Both countries are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year. Nepali Ambassador to the Russian Federation in Moscow is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Similarly, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to India in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Nepal.

Nepal and the Republic of Azerbaijan are working closely at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels towards further strengthening the friendly relations for the mutual benefits of the two countries and the peoples.

The Republic of Azerbaijan had sent humanitarian aid in the aftermath of the earthquakes in 2015. It also provides some scholarships to Nepali students.

Nepal-Azerbaijan Friendship Group has been formed recently in the Federal Parliament of Nepal.

 

Exchange of Visits

Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Mr. KP Sharma Oli visited Azerbaijan to participate in the 18th Summit of Head of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held on 25-26 October 2019.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Pradeep Kumar Gyawali led the Nepali delegation to the 18th Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on 5 April 2018 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Narayan Prakash Saud visited Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement on 3-6 July 2023.

 

Visit of the President to Azerbaijan

Rt. Hon. President Mr. Ramchandra Paudel, leading the Nepali delegation, visited Azerbaijan on 10-15 November 2024 to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of the COP29, which was held in Baku.

The Rt. Hon. President delivered the national statement at the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of the COP29.

The Rt. Hon. President also addressed ‘High Level Dialogue: Advancing the Mountain Agenda and Mainstreaming Mountains and Climate Change within the UNFCCC’ organized by the Kyrgyz Republic on the sidelines of COP29.

The Rt. Honorable President chaired a high-level event titled ‘Mountains in Peril: Loss and Damage in the Himalaya’ organized by the Government of Nepal.

The Rt. Hon. President also participated in a meeting of Heads of Delegation of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) with the United Nations Secretary-General on the sidelines of COP29.

During his Azerbaijan visit, the Rt. Hon. President held meeting with President of Azerbaijan H.E. Ilham Heyder Oglu Aliyev on 14 November 2024.

Parliamentary Friendship Group

Nepal-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group was formed in the Parliament of Nepal in December 2024 with Hon. Dr Anjan Shakya of the Nepal Communist Party (CPN-UML) as the Convener.

Trade/Investment

The size of interactions on trade, investment and tourism between Nepal and the Republic of Azerbaijan is nominal at the moment. Some of the commodities imported by Nepal from Azerbaijan are plastics, electric machinery and equipment. Nepal exports carpets and other textiles floor coverings, clothing accessories, work of art, etc. Trade volume between Nepal and Azerbaijan for the last few years is shown in the table below:

Investment

According to the statistics of the Department of Industry, there were 5 projects of Azerbaijan until FY 2022/23, which brought in investments of Rs. 46 million, supporting the creation of 208 jobs.

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, Azerbaijan’s total FDI stock in Nepal as of mid-July 2022 was as follows:

Tourism

116 Azerbaijanis visited Nepal in 2023 according to Department of Immigration, Nepal.
