The Embassy of Nepal organized a special programme in Ottawa today to commemorate the 72nd National Democracy Day. The event began with the national anthems of Nepal and Canada.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador of Nepal to Canada His Excellency Mr. Bhrigu Dhungana shed light on the historical significance of the National Democracy Day. Stating that the establishment of democracy in 2007 BS has led us to accomplish the goals of federal democratic republic and inclusive governance, he stressed on the need to consolidate the achievements made so far. As we celebrate this important day, we need to contribute from our respective fields to promote a democratic culture in our society, he said.

Highlighting various aspects of Nepal-Canada relations, he mentioned that cooperation between the two countries has been further strengthened with deeper engagements at different levels.

Speaking about Nepal’s priorities, he said that efforts are being focused on bringing about positive change and prosperity in the lives of the Nepali people by building a foundation for socio-economic transformation with emphasis on high and equitable economic development. He also elaborated on the initiatives being taken by the Embassy under economic diplomacy and urged the Non-Resident Nepalis in Canada to further contribute to the development of Nepal through their knowledge, skills, capital and technology.

The programme was also addressed by Mr. Anup Subedi, General Secretary of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Canada, Mr. Kalidas Subedi of Nepalese Canadian Association of Ottawa (NCAO), Ms. Tara Upreti of International Nepali Literary Society (INLS) and Mr. Ajoy Bista of Nepalese Canadian Heritage Centre and Temple Ottawa (NCHCTO).

Conducted by Ms. Rojina Tamrakar, Counsellor of the Embassy, the event was attended by office-bearers and representatives of NRNA and other organizations, professionals, students, and members of the local community.

The Embassy premises have been decorated with national flags and the chancery would remain illuminated for three days.
