Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs

 

Hon. Narayan Kaji Shrestha “Prakash” was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs on 6 March 2024. Prior to this, he served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs from 30 March 2023 to 5 March 2024, preceded by a brief stint as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport from 26 December 2022 to 30 March 2023. Hon Shrestha’s earlier leadership of Foreign Ministry include the periods as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs from September 2011 to February 2012 and May 2012 to March 2013.

While in government, Hon. Shrestha is known as a firm advocate and promoter of good governance, rule of law and fight against all forms of corruption and malpractices.

Hon. Shrestha was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 2008 and, as a member of the vital Constitution Drafting Committee of the Assembly, contributed significantly to the realization of the national agenda of making the Constitution which is inclusive, democratic and based on the notion of social justice and equity. In 2008-2009, Mr. Shrestha was Parliamentary Party Leader of People’s Front Nepal and in 2009-2012, Deputy Parliamentary Party Leader of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). He was elected as National Assembly Member of the Federal Parliament on 23 January 2020. 

Mr. Shrestha started political journey as a member of Communist Party of Nepal (Fourth Congress) back in 1976. He was arrested and imprisoned several times for participation in revolutionary democratic movement, while fighting for the freedom, justice and empowerment of the people. In 1986, he became a Central Committee Member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Fourth Congress). He was a Politburo Member of Communist Party of Nepal (Unity Centre) between 1991 – 2009, General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (Unity Centre) between 1995-2003, Co-General Secretary and General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (Unity Centre) between 2003-2007, General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (Unity Centre) between 2007-2009, and Vice-Chairman of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) in 2009. Since 7 July 2022, he has been the Senior Vice President of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre). He is also the Chief of the International Department of the Party. 

In early 2000s, Mr. Shrestha was an active mediator in the events culminating in 12-point agreement among political parties as well as in the events culminating in Ceasefire, Peace Accords, and Arms and Ammunition Agreement. He is also active in, and has made significant contribution to, steering the country’s unique, home-grown peace process.

Hon. Shrestha holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Tribhuvan University and has authored books and articles on Marxism and Nepali Revolution, theoretical Marxism, history of world communism, and contemporary politics. In 1980s and 1990s, he was Editor of three political journals/magazines: Garjan, Janamat, and Mulyankan. 

Hon Shrestha was born in Gorkha District of Nepal in 1960.
