The Rt. Hon. President of Nepal Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari addressed the Closing Ceremony of United Nations Vesak Day with the theme of “Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace” in Kandy Sri Lanka as Chief Guest today. She highlighted the teachings of Lord Buddha and its relevance in the present day context for the world peace and social harmony. She also conveyed the message of peace, tolerance and fraternity to the world from the land of Gautam Buddha. The event was also attended by His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Maithripala Sirisena and other high ranking officials of the government of Sri Lanka as well as pertinent Buddhist Scholars from seventy two countries.

The Right Honorable President Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari had a bilateral meeting with His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Maithripala Sirisena this morning in Colombo. Bilateral issues as well as other matter of common concerns were discussed during the meeting.

The Rt. Hon. President of Nepal Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari also paid homage to Sacred Tooth relics of Gautam Buddha  at Dalada Maligawa, Kandy.

Also today, she visited Peradeniya Botanical Garden in Kandy and planted a sapling of “Diospyros Nnummulariifolia” belonging to the Ebenaceae family.

The Rt. Hon. President Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari is on an official visit of Sri Lanka at the invitation of H.E. the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Maithripala Sirisena.
