Rt. Hon. President of Nepal Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari attended the celebration programme to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka today, and delivered a statement on the theme of “Nepal-Bangladesh Relations and Bangabandhu’s Birth Centenary”.

In her statement, the Rt. Hon. highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations existing between Nepal and Bangladesh. She also shed light on invaluable contributions of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the independence of Bangladesh and his visions of Sonar Bangla.

The formal program to mark the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50th independence of the Bangladesh, was followed by a cultural performance by both Nepali and Bangladeshi artistes at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka.

Later in the evening, the Rt. Hon. President held talks with the President of Bangladesh and attended the State Banquet hosted by her counterpart in her honor.

Additionally, delegates from Nepal and Bangladesh signed four bilateral instruments namely Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism co-operation, Memorandum of Understanding on sanitary and phyto sanitary co-operation, cultural exchange program, and Letter of Exchange to designate Rohanpur-Singabad railway route as an additional transit route in the gracious presence of Rt. Hon. President of Nepal and Hon. President of Bangladesh at Bangabhaban.

In the afternoon, Hon. Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina paid a courtesy call on Rt. Hon. President of Nepal Mrs. Bhandari. During the meeting, matters of mutual interest and bilateral co-operation were discussed in cordial atmosphere. The Rt. Hon. President also congratulated Hon. Prime Minister of Bangladesh on the occasion of birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of Bangladesh.

Previously, Hon. Foreign Minister of Bangladesh His Excellency A.K. Abdul Momen, M.P. paid a courtesy call on Rt. Hon. President of Nepal.

Earlier in the morning, Rt. Hon. President Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari visited the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar, Dhaka and paid homage to martyrs and war heroes of the nation amid a wreath laying ceremony. She also signed visitors’ book and planted magnolia sapling today.

Rt. Hon. President Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari is paying a two-day State visit to Bangladesh. Her Excellency is scheduled to return to Kathmandu tomorrow.
