Hon. Mr. Prakash Man Singh, Deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the Nepalese delegation met with H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General in New York today. On the occasion, the Secretary-General commended Nepal on the promulgation of democratic constitution in Nepal. He thanked the Deputy Prime Minister for Nepal’s longstanding contribution to peacekeeping. The Secretary-General inquired and showed concern about the ongoing obstruction of essential supplies along the Nepal-India border and the difficulties it has caused. The Deputy Prime Minister said that the issue should be resolved at the earliest possible in order to avoid serious humanitarian crisis it might invite.
The Deputy Prime Minister congratulated the Secretary-General for the successful conclusion of the UN Summit that adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Secretary-General stressed the need for taking strong ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals and administrative measures. The Deputy Prime Minister informed that the Government of Nepal would integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into national plans and programmes beginning with the reconstruction works.
Hon. Mr. Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, Minister for Foreign Affairs and senior members of the delegation were present during the meeting. The Secretary-General was accompanied by Under Secretaries-General for the Department of Field Support, the Political Affairs and Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing Countries and other senior UN officials.
Similarly, the Hon. Minister held a meeting with Mr. HervéLadsous, Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations today. The Under Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Nepal’s support to the UN in maintaining international peace and security through UN peacekeeping operations. On the occasion, the Hon. Minister highlighted Nepal’s willingness and ability to contribute from senior level leadership positions in the UN peace architecture.
Earlier on 01 October 2015, Hon. Mr. MahendraBahadurPandey, Minister for Foreign Affairs and H.E. Mr. Arnold J. Nicholson Q.C., Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica signed a Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Nepal and Jamaica. On the occasion, the two Ministers expressed the need for promoting bilateral relations for mutual benefits in the days to come.
In the evening today, the Deputy Prime Minister attended a dinner hosted in honour of the Nepalese delegation to the 70th Session of the UNGA by H.E. Mr. Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Ambassador/Permanent Representative, at his residence.
The Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Singh along with members of his delegation left New York for Kathmandu this evening.
