UN, Int’l Organizations and Int’l Law Division
Introduction and Functions
Under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations, International Organizations and International Law Division is responsible for Nepal’s relations with the United Nations and other international organizations. It also oversees the three permanent missions of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, Geneva and Vienna.
The Division works to protect and promote Nepal’s national interest in the United Nations and other multilateral and international organizations and processes. In this regard, the Division makes substantive preparations, and plans and performs functions related to the participation and representation of Nepal in conferences, sessions and meetings of the UN, its specialized agencies, and other multilateral and international organizations, and entities.
Its major functions can be listed as follows:
- Functions related to the participation and representation of Nepal in the United Nations General Assembly and its Main Committees, as well as the subsidiary organs of the General Assembly.
- Functions related to the participation and representation of Nepal in the Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council and their subsidiary organs.
- Functions related to multilateral conventions and treaties, and international law
- Functions related to the specialized agencies of the United Nations
- Functions related to UN peacekeeping missions and other missions
- Functions related to the participation and representation of Nepal in other international organizations, meetings and conferences
- Coordination and facilitation of high-level visits related to the Division
- Coordination with the UN agencies in Nepal
- Work as the National Disarmament Authority of Nepal
- Overseeing of Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad related to the Division
- Functions related to some international non-governmental organizations.
