Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations His Excellency Mr. Jan Kenneth Eliasson called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon’ble Kamal Thapa at the latter’s office today.

On the occasion, views were exchanged on matters relating to the devastation caused by the earthquake, the reconstruction works, the forthcoming World Humanitarian Summit as well as the political development in Nepal.

While referring to the high magnitude of the disaster that Nepal confronted in 2015, H.E. Mr. Eliasson also spoke about the strong and positive reactions from the international community in support of Nepal.

Deputy Prime Minister Hon’ble Thapa apprised him of the reconstruction works being undertaken by the Government in the affected areas. He also stated that the process of reconstruction, though delayed for some time, has now been gaining momentum.

The Deputy Secretary-General highlighted the significance of the forthcoming World Humanitarian Summit, as the world continues to confront both man made and natural disasters. He inquired about Nepal’s participation in the Summit, and expressed that the lessons learned by Nepal would be of great significance to many countries. He also underlined the significance of the preventive measures and the ability to build back better.

On the occasion, the Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister also briefed him about the highly representative and broad-based constitution making process, inclusiveness as well as the progressive nature of the constitution. Hon’ble Thapa informed him about the ongoing efforts of the Government to address the remaining issues in the spirit of accommodation and compromise within the framework of the constitution.

Deputy Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the consistent contribution made by Nepal to the UN peacekeeping operations and also praised Nepal’s ongoing efforts to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into national plan.

Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Eliasson arrived in Kathmandu today. He is also scheduled to call on the Right Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Right Hon’ble President during his stay in Nepal. He is leaving Kathmandu on 2 May 2016.
