The US Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has agreed to provide a financial grant assistance of USD 500 million for the implementation of infrastructure projects in Nepal. The total project cost will be USD 630 million of which the Government of Nepal will contribute USD 130 million.
This MCC compact is the first compact agreement in South Asia for boosting up regional energy connectivity and minimize transportation cost for higher economic growth and job creation. The government of Nepal takes the ownership of the project to complete the project on time. MCC support also helps Nepal’s effort to move forward the reform agenda in energy and transportation sector, good governance, procurement, new business opportunities and technology transfer.
The objective of the project is to construct about 300 km electricity transmission lines and to support the maintenance of about 300km roads in various parts of the country.
The compact agreement to this effect was signed today by Honorable Minister of Finance Mr. Gyanendra Bahadur Karki and MCC CEO Mr. Jonathan Nash on behalf of the Government of Nepal and US Government’s MCC respectively amidst a signing ceremony held in US Department of State’s Treaty Room in Washington DC. US Deputy Secretary of State Mr. John J. Sullivan, Nepal’s Ambassador to US Excellency Dr. Arjun Kumar Karki, US Ambassador to Nepal Excellency Ms. Alaina B. Teplitz, Senior officials from US Government and Government of Nepal were present during the signing ceremony.
“I am pleased to be one of the signatories of this Compact Agreement that opens up an additional avenue of US- Nepal bilateral relations and economic cooperation.” Honorable Finance Minister Mr. Gyanendra Bahadur Karki said during the signing ceremony.
“This is a remarkable support of new US Administration to Nepal which created a new milestone in development endeavor in Nepal”, HE Ambassador Dr. Arjun Kumar Karki said.
During the signing ceremony, US Deputy Secretary of State Mr. John J. Sullivan expressed his best wishes for the successful implementation of the project for the Nepali people in this auspicious occasion of 70th anniversary of bilateral relationship between the two countries.
The Government of Nepal has expressed its sincere appreciation to the Government of United States- Millennium Challenge Corporation for this assistance and for its continued support to the socio-economic development of Nepal.

नेपालको पूर्वाधार क्षेत्रका परियोजनाहरु कार्यान्वयनका लागि अमेरिकी सरकारको Millenieum Challenge Corporation (MCC) नेपाललाई 500 million अमेरिकी डलरअनुदान सहायता रकम प्रदान गर्न सहमत भएको छ । उक्त परियोजनाको कूल लागत 630 million अमेरिकी डलर मध्ये नेपाल सरकारको तर्फबाट 130 million अमेरिकी डलर बराबरको योगदान रहने छ।
MCC को यो Compact Agreement दक्षिण एसियामै पहिलो हो जसले क्षेत्रीय उर्जा सञ्जाल विस्तार गर्न र यातयातको लागत न्यून गरी उच्च आर्थिक वृद्वि र रोजगारी सिर्जना गर्न तिब्रता प्रदान गर्नेछ । यो परियोजनामा आफ्नो प्रतिवद्व रकम उपलब्ध गराई समयमै सम्पन्न गर्न नेपाल सरकारले स्वामित्व ग्रहण गर्नेछ । यो सहायताले नेपालमा उर्जा र यातयात क्षेत्र, सुशासन, खरिद, नयाँ व्यवसायको सिर्जना र प्रविधि हस्तान्तरणका क्षेत्रमानेपाल सरकारले अगाडि बढाएको सुधारकोप्रयासमा मद्दत पुर्याउनेछ ।
सो परियोजनाको उद्देश्य देशका विभिन्न भागमा करिब 300 कि.मी विद्युतीय प्रशारण लाइनहरुको निर्माण तथा करीब 300 कि.मी सडकमार्गको मर्मत गर्ने रहेको छ।
उक्त सहायता सम्झौतामा नेपाल सरकारको तर्फबाट अर्थमन्त्री श्री ज्ञानेन्द्रवहादुर कार्की र अमेरिकी सरकारको तर्फबाट MCC का Acting CEO Mr. Jonathan Nash द्वारा आज एक विशेष समारोहका बीच वासिङ्गटन डि.सी स्थित अमेरिकी विदेश मन्त्रालयको Treaty Room मा हस्ताक्षर सम्पन्न भयो। उक्त सम्झौता समारोहमा
अमेरिकी विदेश मन्त्रालयका Deputy Secretary of State Mr. John J. Sullivan, अमेरिकाका लागि नेपाली राजदूत डा. अर्जुन कुमार कार्की, नेपालका लागि अमेरिकी राजदूत Ms. Aliana B. Teplitz एंव नेपाल सरकार तथा अमेरिकी सरकारका अन्य वरिष्ठ अधिकारीहरुको उपस्थिति रहेको थियो ।
उक्त समारोहमा माननीय अर्थमन्त्री श्री ज्ञानेन्द्र बहादुर कार्कीले “यो Compact Agreement को एक हस्ताक्षरकर्ता भएकोमा खुसी व्यक्त गर्दै यस सहायताले नेपाल-अमेरिका द्विपक्षीय सम्बन्ध तथा आर्थिक सहायताको क्षेत्रमा नयाँ आयाम थपेको” कुरा व्यक्त गर्नुभयो।
सोही अवसरमा अमेरिकाका लागि नेपाली राजदूत डा. अर्जुन कुमार कार्कीले “यो सहायता नयाँ US Administration को तर्फबाट नेपालको लागि उल्लेखनीय रहेको र यो नेपालको विकासको लागि कोशेढुङ्गा सावित हुने” कुरा व्यक्त गर्नुभयो ।
सो समारोहमा US Deputy Secretary of State Mr. John J. Sullivan ले परियोजनाको सफल कार्यान्वनको शुभेच्छा व्यक्त गर्दै अमेरिका-नेपाल द्विपक्षीय सम्बन्धको ७० औ वर्षगाठको अवसरमाप्राप्त यो सहायतानेपाली जनताको लागि महत्वपूर्ण हुने कुरा व्यक्त गर्नुभयो ।
नेपाल सरकारले यो अनुदान सहयोगको लागि र निरन्तर रुपमा नेपालको सामाजिक-आर्थिक विकासमा गरेको योगदानको लागि अमेरिकी सरकारप्रति हार्दिक आभार प्रकट गरेको छ ।
